idea: import SRTM data into GRASS GIS and use the r.contour module to
make contour lines, then export images with the d.out.gpsdrive module.

Note that the "map types" are very misleading, and IMO should be
changed. It has absolutely nothing to do with content, rather it deals
with map projection, ie if the source data was lat/lon Plate Carrée
(degree based; 1 deg lat == 1 deg lon scaling) or projected (feet/meters
based, e.g. UTM; ground distance is scaled the same in all directions).
