I woudn't add a separate button into gpsdrive, I would leave it to the already 
present poi-management.
It should be enough, to have a script or a daemon, that writes the information 
into the poi-table in gpsdrive's geoinfo database with a special poi-type.

but as tweety already mentioned, you should wait until after the release 
because then there will be also some significant changes to the database.
