can you try to add the following to your 
/etc/apt/sources.list
deb     http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debian-gis experimental main 
non-free contrib
I hope it was in there.

I have the following mapnik packages installed:
dpkg --get-selections "*mapnik*"
libmapnik-dev                                   install
libmapnik1d                                     install
mapnik-plugins                                  install
mapnik-utils                                    install
osm-data-mapnik                                 purge
python-mapnik                                   install

This package is still beta. But in the current state it should only copy one 
file to your /tmp Directory.

This is probably because the mapnik package is missing
