also, did you use the "100000" scale factor as it is a 1:100,000 map?
I'm not so sure that is right.
What are the 4 corners of the map in lat/lon?
Is it a lat/lon map or Mercator projection, both? ...?

No, .png (or .tif, ...) should work ok.
AFAIK these days .gif-only is only required for Tcl/Tk GUIs.
