Your System is debian testing too?

This is an interim description. Currently i try to get the -osm-mapnik-data 
package up and running. And as soon as this package is running the import 
should be a little bit easier.
Also I hope in the long term all the coastline stuff will be inside osm too. 
So this will hopefully skip the shapefile import in the long term too.

The shapefiles are for the overview. So if you only want to see the rendering 
in low zoom levels you're probably fine without them.

Can you try the SELECT statement in the Install HowTo. This shows at least, if 
the user which you run gpsdrive can access the database.
