Have you tried to use xgps to see if gpsd sends data the complete time while
you are running gpsdrive?

As what my understanding was, gpsd should normally connect and communicate to
your GPS in garmin mode and then send out NMEA strings to gpsdrive. So this
should really work, even if it (probably) is not too often used, since most
people switch there devices to NMEA mode.
