Its in there sure enough :) Apparently its due to libiconv not existing on
some minor and irrelevant systems like, say, debian and suse but comes as part
of libc6 (sarcasm, sometimes easy to forget the net doesn't speak just one
language). The script makes no mention of libiconv but it wont find iconv.h
without it.
Anyway, this error doesn't seem to make any difference as mapnik is working fine
now the world borders are removed from osm.xml. (thanks again

As for as I can tell it's quite important, the new point of interest search
function uses it to search the osm database. Not sure if thats done through
mapnik or directly from gpsdrive though so could be it will work ok without
it. Got scons to find it eventually by telling it where to look on the command
line but it still had that weird problem of sometimes finding it then missing
it with the same configuration when installing.
With the kind offer of overhauling the website it may be useful to have a FAQ
section with extracts from the mailing list, most of the info I found while
debugging came from this list but came via other mirrors (ie nabbles). Even
then it was usually a case or reading through 5 or 6 posts in a thread to find
the next part of the puzzle, a known problems section with error messages and
snippets of what worked from the posts would be a big help.
One other request, please don't use flash on the site. Not sure if thats
possible with adobe products but there must be some way around it ;)
cheers
