There was a patch some time ago which (as what I understand) enabled other GTK 
applications to use gpsdrive inside a container ...

You can use OSM-Vector data via the standard mapnik-postgis-database. Or you 
could change osm.xml accordingly to support shapefiles and then let the 
mapnik-plugin render from a file.
