[ gpsdrive ] database problems

now I made a new clean installation of ubuntu 7.10 an updated. then I 
added the etch gpsdrive repository and I installed all needed including 
postgis, postgresql, python mapnik with all libboost dependencies, and 
openstreetmap world boundaries.
now, could somebody describe step by step, the way to  install and use  
planet files. when I say " step by step" is because I know there must be 
an error in the first starting of the procedure: for instance, when I 
launch mapnik-osm-updater.sh, should I be "sudo" or "sudo su" ? any way 
I am not a programmer or a linux expert, so I often do not understand 
correctly the contents of this file or the other and I go on making 
mistakes. I just need help.
if this is not the right place to ask for this low level support I need
