I normally even start it as root itself. But this shouldn't make too much 
difference.

This is why I would strongly recommend to start with a smaller excerpt for the 
beginning.

So the command to be issued as root would be for example:
	mapnik-osm-updater.sh  --all-planet-geofabrik=europe/germany

Possible other Values are:
