how to install gpsdrive and openstreetmap(osm) on a clean updated ubuntu
7.10 gutsy gibbon system

First of all let's add repositories for downloading the last version of
gpsdrive (the one in gutsy repository won't work with osm):

open a terminal or use synaptic to add them:

deb     http://www.gpsdrive.de/debian etch main
deb-src http://www.gpsdrive.de/debian etch main

add gpg key by typing in a terminal:

gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.de.pgp.net --recv-keys 147DAD31
gpg --edit-key trust 147DAD31
gpg --armor --export 147DAD31 | sudo apt-key add -

now reload repositories: "sudo apt-get update".

install gpsdrive which will install many dependencies

during the installation of gpsdrive, mysql will be installed and will
ask you to set a password: just type a your sudo system password in.

go to
"http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libboost&searchon=names&suite=stable&section=all", download and install:

libboost-python1.33.1_1.33.1-10_i386.deb

go to " http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/python/python-mapnik "

download and install python-mapnik 0.4.0-2 (notice: ?the older version
in your synaptic package list will not be installed)

then  install  postgresql  postgis  postgresql-8.2-postgis 

install openstreetmap-mapnik-world-boundaries (more than 600 mb, takes
one hour more and less) that is now in your synaptic.

if you want to use gpsdrive with a gps receiver , install gpsd package.

now everything should work, but you have no maps installed to view or
develop but the world boundaries.

to fetch openstreetmap.org maps, there are some more steps to be done
using terminal.

to install the whole planet file, you need a lot of space on your hard
disk: the compressed file is more than 3 GB....and grows every day. 

you can choose to install partial files , like europe or single
countries of europe . I do not know how to get partial files of the rest
of the world and if it is possible.

for the whole planet:

sudo mapnik-osm-updater.sh --all-planet (on my system athlon xp2800, 2
gb dual channel ram, adsl 2mb it takes more than 24 hrs to download and
install)

for partial files of europe:

sudo mapnik-osm-updater.sh --all-planet-geofabrik=? (with this cmd you
will get the list of files as below):

Possible Values are:
        europe
        europe/austria
        europe/belgium
        europe/france
        europe/germany
        europe/luxembourg
        europe/netherlands
        europe/poland
        europe/switzerland
        europe/germany/baden-wuerttemberg
        europe/germany/bayern
        europe/germany/berlin
        europe/germany/brandenburg
        europe/germany/bremen
        europe/germany/hamburg
        europe/germany/hessen
        europe/germany/mecklenburg-vorpommern
        europe/germany/niedersachsen
        europe/germany/nordrhein-westfalen
        europe/germany/rheinland-pfalz
        europe/germany/saarland
        europe/germany/sachsen-anhalt
        europe/germany/sachsen
        europe/germany/schleswig-holstein
        europe/germany/thueringen

now choose the file you want to download and type:


sudo mapnik-osm-updater.sh --all-planet-geofabrik="the file you
choosed" ( example: europe/france).

it will be quite fast

so wait until everithing is downloaded and installed and then launch
gpsdrive, press the "map control" button and choose "mapnik mode"

follow gpsdrive help to use (easy)

P.S. the result  to make gpsdrive work with osm without having any
specific informatic knowledge, was achieved with the help of gpsdrive
mailing list(and many frustrating hours of suffering loking at
terminal !!!WARNINGS and ERRORS!!! and FAILED!) 
     if you consider that this simple howto can be useful to non
specialized newbies, please do any changement you think is necessary.
