as far as I read,
the wiki was not so helpful.
the wiki compiler is certainly an expert, while I am not,so many steps were considered obvious, while they are not for non experts. this I noticed is a matters that still affects a large part of linux world.
I have got looking for unmentioned dependencies and I noticed that in a few days gpsdrive updated avoiding many of these difficulties.
but something still remains. for instance, I installed postgresql and postgis, but not postgres-8.2-postgis, and it didn't work.
so I think they will soon
become dependencies installing mapnik.
I guess that in a very short time everithing will be very easy thank to the work of all of you.
but it was not for me and maybe some others.

thanks
carlo
