gdal 1.5.0 and newer support WMS download format insternally. it would be great to link that to NASA's OnEarth WMS server which provides 30m LANDSAT and Blue Marble (by month) etc imagery. I think SRTM topography is also available, if not from NASA's server then from another of the many WMS servers.

So some gdal commands could be added into gpsfetchmap.pl bypassing other GIS middleman software. current grass solution is r.in.wms|r.in.onearth -> d.out.gpsdrive.
