which version of gpsdrive are you using (gpsdrive --version)?
your resolution problem seems to point at v2.09, which is very outdated.
please use at least a 2.10pre version or the last from svn.
you can download all maps for a specific area and scale with the script
gpsfetchmap.pl which should be part of your gpsdrive distribution.
