[ gpsdrive ] postgresql & postgis integration

Greets:

Following the tutorial submitted by info at 4x4falcon.com and on the same system 
I repeated have run into the same error. The instruction is not wrong rather 
there is something that I am missing as a previous instruction set produced 
the same errors. Specifically when issuing the command:

"$> psql -d gis -f /usr/share/postgresql-8.3-postgis/lwpostgis.sql" as user 
postgres the line always barfs for me. The result is 

psql:/usr/share/postgresql-8.3-postgis/lwpostgis.sql:6269: ERROR:  current 
transaction is aborted, commands ignored until end of transaction block
psql:/usr/share/postgresql-8.3-postgis/lwpostgis.sql:6307: ERROR:  current 
transaction is aborted, commands ignored until end of transaction block

until 6430 at which time psql issues the command "ROLLBACK" As Ive had the 
same error testing on both postgresql 8.2 and 8.3 its time to ask for help in 
tracking down the source of this problem. 

If anyone has any insights on where I should start, it would be appreciated. 
Fired off the same question to the postgis list as well late this evening.
