I really don't want to start a distro war on this list (so the following is 
just my personal observations) but I have noticed this a lot if this indeed 
is the case in this situations. That and permissions being inconsistent and a 
pooched/buggy bluetooth stack to name a few issues.  

I have used suse since 5.2 and its been rock solid, highly QA'd with an 
increase in QA since Novell took over. However the developer community seems 
to have migrated to Ubuntu, probably for non technical reasons so if you want 
to play on the leading edge now, which has its advantages and disadvantages 
you almost need to play with K/Ubuntu or compile a lot of newer stuff from 
source. Recently in the gis sector Novell has picked up the ball however and 
has prepared a dedicated build system. 

For now however I will stay with Kubuntu to complete my gpsdrive projects.
