Oh ... by the way ... 
to update the xml file you normally will only have to start 

gpsdrive/scripts/mapnik$ ./mapnik-osm-xml_2_gpsdrive-osm-xml.pl

this will try to take the original osm.xml from svn.openstreetmap.org and 
tries to convert it to a gpsdrive-osm.xml file.
