Didn't read this thread for quite a long time but as I read it now, I
have just exactly the same problem...... (Gentoo here, too ;)
gpsdrive used to work with mapnik and OSM, then suddenly stopped;
generate_image.py still works, though.
When I used expedia-maps before and then switch to mapnik-mode the maps
just stay, if I then restarte gpsdrive the map stays black with that "No
map for ..."-message in the status-bar.
Might be related to Mapnik-update to 0.5.1 or such, maybe gonna
investigate some later time....
