Bill:
I managed to install GPSdrive to the native ASUS Linux (xandros) using the "Official Debian package" which was version 2.09-2.11_i386.deb. I used Synaptic and got a message saying "Successfully applied all changes. You can close the window now". I assume this means what it says but the DETAILS that look like errors. My limited experience with Linux is not enough to know if this is or will cause problems. I am attaching a screen shot of these, and would appreciate help or comment.
I did get GPSD to run by executing //usr/bin/gpsdrive with a double-click using the file listing thru ASUS desktop "File Manager". It comes up too large for the eeePC screen but it can be dragged with Alt+ mouse-left-eye dragging. This is likely OK for the speeds we get with a sail boat ( 8 Knots max.).
I tried your suggested command "sudo gpsd /dev/ttyUSB0" but NO LUCK. I suspect that the problem is in the /ttyUSB0 part of the command.
I did download from Holux GPS the Linux serial/USB driver but can not figure out how to install it OR to which directory.
Since I am retired, I have some time to explore with NOAA the map-format issue to see if they have suggestions for conversion to the GPSD recognized formats. I will post my discoveries, if any.
I did find a great source of Canadian & Topographic and other maps available for free download from the Government of Canada Map Office. Many of these are in GeoTIFF format which conforms to the TIFF standard and is supposed to be readable by any TIFF-capable software. Go to: http://www.geogratis.gc.ca/geogratis/en/download/scanned.html
Your help & ideas would be appreciated.
Are you anywhere near the Toronto area ?

Vic, I'm in the exactly the same position as you. I use Fugawi on an XP laptop, and was hoping for something similar on the eeePC
I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on the eeePC. I load gpsd with the following command:
sudo gpsd /dev/ttyUSB0
(Note the sudo)
Try xgps to confirm that the GPS data are being processed. I tried a Garmin GPS-18 and a GlobalSat WAAS GPS. Both are USB, and both play ok without anything addtional being done, even though their output protocols are different.
Xastir and GPSDrive both work fine.
Now if I can just get marine charts set up...

Please clarify: are you saying that you are able to make to make your Garmin unit recognized by the eeePC ? If yes, what are you seeing on the eeePC ? Have you succeeded with install of GPSD software on eeePC ? If yes, how did you do that ?
That's a lot of questions but it has been a frustrating exercise so far when I compare it with loading/using my Fugawi navigation on other XP laptop.

Me too. I think there are a several eeepc users who want to adapt charts for their boating, more coming as it becomes known. Presently I use a Garmin Etrex Mariner and would like a crossover program to use charts with real time tracking.

I am new to Linux via the micro laptop from ASUS (eeePC). I have used
the NOAA free-download BSB & ENC charts with my Fugawi Windows-based
navigation software for 4 years. I am trying to duplicate this on the
Linux (Xandros) factory pre-install on the eeePC which would
significantly reduce my power requirements on my sail boat.
I am in the Toronto Canada area and would appreciate linking up with a
fellow boater willing to work on this and to document it for the growing
number of eeePC users.
I am trying to get my eeePC to fully recognize/receive the GPS sentences
from my GPS-usb receiver made by Holux (G-613) for which Holux provides
a Linux download driver.
