you need to have a notebook running gpsdrive in the car, that has some kind of 
network connection to your computer used for display.

you can record tracks inside gpsdrive, but gpx is also a standard format that 
can be imported.
you could use gpxlogger or cgpslogger for this if you are already using gpsd.
