sure, I think you are on the right path..

play back the recorded gps stream with gpsd's gpsfake utility, then run
gpsdrive as usual. gpsdrive won't know that gpsd's datastream isn't real
time.

raw NMEA stream is the standard for raw data from a GPS.
GPX is the standard for passing around recorded GPS tracks.


for your case it sounds like recording and playback will both happen in
gpsd-land so you can use whatever internal gpsd format is useful, ie
whatever gpsfake wants.
