Hi,

I'm new to the group, had joined a couple of months ago, put
it away, but am now back for more grief by the looks of things.

Given:

Toshita A70
Garmin GPS18-USB-17216431
Suse-Linux-10.3

I wasn't getting anywhere so I just downloaded all the
latest linux packages and will try them tonight.

Meanwhile, with XP being a great hardware troubleshooting
plugin, I was wondering if anyone could give me a link to
some tutorial about how to test this usb device to see if
it's DOA or alive. Tried this 'Compass' utility but nopthing
copmes out of any com-port. Does something have to be turned
on or what?

Under linux the gpsd command line testing outlined in the
INSTALL file, like

stty -F /dev/ttyUSB0 ispeed 4800 && cat </dev/ttyUSB0
or
stty -F /dev/ttyS0 ispeed 4800 && cat </dev/ttyS0

never produce any data either. I have a hard time guessing
what port or device name to try, there are 3 usb plugs on
this laptop.

TIA
