I don't know, if the option -g works, have you tried --geometry instead?
at least in the svn version --geometry or -G works.

th -M option sets the display mode:

use "-M car" for 'car mode' which has a cleaner main window with bigger 
buttons, that makes as much use of the space as possible. it's made for small 
car touchscreens.

use "-M pda" for really small screens. but this one is not really tested as 
good as the other modes.

use "-M desktop" or no option to start in standard mode.

the minimum resolution depends on the mode.

I have gpsdrive running on a 800x400 touchscreen for my carbox, that works 
perfectly (screenshot at http://www.opencarbox.net).
