mapnik needs some truetype fonts (DejaVuSans.ttf) to work. are they installed,
and where are they installed?
(the default for debian is /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/)
maybe it helps, if you set the right font path in gpsdriverc with
mapnik_font_path = YOUR_FONTPATH
