it has always been a dream of mine to do the Erie Canal.. sounds like a
fun trip! (perhaps a tad chilly in november though)
May I suggest the island of Cutty Hunk (north of Martha's Vineyard) as a
nice place to drop anchor along the way..

do you have the BSB->gdalwarp->gdal_slice.sh (now in SVN scripts/)
method working steadily? I worry that it may struggle with canal charts
which are not naturally north-up, but maybe gdalwarp can handle that ok.

ummm, not sure, the packaging gets tricky.
FWIW after building from source you can run the built but not yet
installed version from gpsdrive/svn/trunk/build/src/gpsdrive
make a symlink to there from "~/bin/gpsdrive_svn" ...?
