As an end user I think this would be a great addition and valued as I'm 
currently learning the capabilities of gdal. Supporting gdal would allow 
users to import self made maps for example as well as alternate map sources  
and with appropriate scripting as it currently the case, scripts could be 
written to take source maps and auto convert them to acceptable formats for 
gps drive. 

So for the end users a collection of maps in a specific folder could in theory 
be automagically processed by gpsdrive and rendered as required. 

Secondly in looking at the new help page I found that gpsdrive is available in 
embedded form via the -e command. Given that gdal supports many file formats 
this may of value also for those who chose to embed gpsdrive in another 
application. 

Just an idea now I gotta get to work..)
