Sounds like some parts of ../src/util might not be too useful. When you 
say you 'commented out' did you check this into trunk SVN or were you 
just playing with your own codebase...

Put another way, is there anything else in the GDAL code which makes it 
valuable enough to patch and keep instead of ignoring?
