(as a general comment/plea to new users)
if you find a place where the instructions are thin/wrong to a pair of
new eyes, please post a patch to the README.* or if unsure of exact text
compose on the wiki and then post a link to that for review.
it's a great way to give back to the project and helps the next
contestant down the same path to not have to fight the same battles you
did.

for others who are looking back, which docs are missing is not at all
obvious.
