I have done a bit more experimenting, and found that building gpsdrive from source it has the same problem, but if I build it without mapnik support it runs fine. This is not very satisfactory (I want to use the openstreetmap maps), but perhaps will help with debugging?

In the meantime, I am having trouble getting this new version of gpsdrive to see the points of interest in my MySQL database. Even if I copy the options into the config file ~/.gpsdrive/gpdriverc:
dbhostname = localhost
dbname = geoinfo
dbuser = gast
dbpass = gast
dbtable = poi
they disappear as soon as I run gpsdrive again. What do I need to do to make gpsdrive use my old database of points?
