I should also mention at as long as we stay with "Map Scale 1:50,000"
methods it will always be a bit arbitrary. That works for printed maps
(where 1cm == 0.01m) but not for computer displays which between users may
be different sizes and resolutions. So "meters per pixel" is open to how
big a pixel is. Maybe X-Windows can tell you a little about what it
thinks the DPI is (-75 or -100 fonts..), but as that never seems to work
properly after all these years, I don't know what hope there is for us
with that.
