Ok, so it is very likely then that the metadata is overflowing a
buffer and corrupting what follows. Please file a GDAL bug for it:
 http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/

FWIW, u,v velocity component data bands can be plotted in GRASS with
d.rast.arrow. (I've always toyed with the idea of adding wind barb
rendering to that)
