[ gpsdrive ] beginner user

Could someone give me step by step directions on how to get GPSDrive to see one of my eTrex gpsrs? I am just learning Linux so most explanations are over my head, especially those that assume the user already knows proper coding to key into Terminal. I need to start somewhere and this program looks great.
