I believe that newer versions of gpsd will output raw (pseudo) NMEA even if the gps is sending sirf/garmin/ binary protocol to gpsd. So you can use
GpsDrive even with the binary-only garmins. I must remember to check, last
time I had that GpsDrive and xgps was reporting NaN for altitude although
something resembling altitude was in the NMEA message. I suspect that their
fields were off by one but haven't confirmed this.
there is a script in the gpsdrive scripts/ dir which will switch the
gps back to nmea mode if it has swapped into binary mode (e.g. by cgps)
