keep stats on the downloads to get an idea of the users base. To be somewhat 
accurate it would require closer communications with other distro's as almost 
all distro's offer gpsdrive in some version. Perhaps a self registration nag 
screen in the way to go. A nice friendly one indicating its only a usage poll 
and no personal data is collected. Geographic location would also be nice 
option to include, then post it all on the website. 

Something like this:

Where do you use gpsdrive: in the car/truck, on the boat, in my plane
In what region do you reside: city, country or lat & long
Then pull distro and kernel version automatically but make it known.
Finally an invite to join the discuss list for support.

I think you would be surprised how many people actually use it. Even for 
testing. What surprises me is how low the traffic is on the discuss list 
(very detailed information however and great support) but its mostly the same 
people. 

A more sophisticated splash screen would be nice too. Sorry I have no graphic 
talents...:)
