I don't think removing it would help portability in any meaningful way.
It is only a stopper on Etch, which is quickly headed towards the history
books, and a work-around exists (WITH_GDA3=OFF). AFAICT GDA3 should be
fine for Ubuntu gutsy (and newer).

When making this decision, I would suggest to concentrate on what is the
most robust solution for the future, not the past.
