Another idea for a "specific routing backend" might be pgrouting
(http://pgrouting.postlbs.org/). It lets the database (which is closest
to the data) do all the work.
I don't have any experience with it and yesterday when I had time to
take alook at it the homepage was down (but is working again) but it
might me easy to implement in gpsdrive.
