First, install gpsd-clients. Then use xgps to verify the correct
operation of gpsd.
You may have to muck around with the setup ("dpkg-reconfigure gps") so
that gpsd finds the receiver. See /etc/default/gpsd for the options
available.

Only then should you bother with gpsdrive.
This should be a FAQ if it isn't already.
