That seems to be an understatement Hamish.

All humour aside, I have sunday free so will give this material a read at 
least. Not sure at this time if I can be of help or not but will give its a 
good once over, Its actually interesting stuff. Both a qgis plugin and 
inclusion in gpsdrive would be very interesting and worthwhile
