Hi Richard,

Ok you should be able to symlink the usb stick as ~/.gpsdrive/maps and
just download the osm maps from gpsdrive and they will be stored on the
usb stick while connected to the internet.

When you then go on the road they will be available, assuming you are
using the same comptuer.

Why not just install mapnik with the osm data and generate the maps on the
move? Details on the gpsdrive wiki.
