"Setting up Mapnik" howto: http://gpsdrive.sf.net/wiki

On the new OSGeo LiveDVD demo disc you will find a full PostGIS database
with the full NSW (+Australia??) OpenStreetMap data dump. (try MapFish
among others)
   http://download.osgeo.org/livedvd/

For GpsDrive on that disc I extracted tiles for the Sydney CBD, you
can download that tileset here:
  http://sourceforge.net/projects/gpsdrive/files/

To make those tiles I setup GpsDrive with the full AU and NZ osm data
using the instructions found in the above wiki page, + the
gpsdrive_mapnik_gentiles script. I think everything is on the LiveDVD
to get Mapnik support working directly (ie data + built with support),
but I'm not enough of a Postgres + OSM guru to figure out how to make
the connection. Probably just a few database commands and quick edits
to GpsDrive's osm.xml file, ...?

If you are using the latest SVN source code (ie newer than 2.10pre7) & if
you know your route you can manually download maps along the path with
Option->Maps->Download in the menus (easy) or the gpsfetchmap script
(hard but bulk).

Mapnik is more work to set up, but once it is running the result is
leaps and bounds better. You will of course be limited by how much folks
have added to OSM, so it probably wouldn't hurt to download some of the
LANDSAT maps via the Maps->Download menu.
