I can now build and install. When I run for the first time, I get:

geoinfo.db

ccurley at grissom:~/gpsdrive-trunk/build$ gpsdrive
created /home/ccurley/.gpsdrive/
created /home/ccurley/.gpsdrive/maps/
created /home/ccurley/.gpsdrive/tracks/
created /home/ccurley/.gpsdrive/routes/
Created map_koord.txt /home/ccurley/.gpsdrive/maps//map_koord.txt
Speech Dispatcher not available, disabling speech output!
Connection to GPS Daemon on 127.0.0.1:2947 established.
DB: Error while opening /usr/local/share/icons/map-icons/geoinfo.db:
unable to open database file
ccurley at grissom:~/gpsdrive-trunk/build$

This may be because map-icons isn't built:

ccurley at grissom:~/gpsdrive-trunk/build$ ll /usr/local/share/icons
total 16
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2009-10-25 16:53 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 4096 2009-06-29 17:13 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2802 2009-10-25 16:18 gpsdrive.png
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-04-20 18:02 hicolor
ccurley at grissom:~/gpsdrive-trunk/build$

Simply making it as root doesn't work. I get it to work by chmodding the
directory to a+w.

root at grissom:/usr/local/share/icons/map-icons# chmod a+w .
root at grissom:/usr/local/share/icons/map-icons# ll
total 8
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2009-10-25 17:03 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-10-25 17:03 ..
root at grissom:/usr/local/share/icons/map-icons#

Once gpsdrive is up and running, I see:

root at grissom:/usr/local/share/icons/map-icons# ll
total 12
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2009-10-25 17:05 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-10-25 17:03 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 ccurley ccurley 1 2009-10-25 17:05 geoinfo.db
root at grissom:/usr/local/share/icons/map-icons#

Localization:

I set my units of measure to US, but the "Lookup Point of Interest"
popup window has max distance as km, not miles. I haven't entered any
PoIs yet, so I don't know if the value shown is actually 10 km or 10
miles.

Ubuntuism: For README.Ubuntu: On Ubuntu 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope, and
9.10, Kosmic Koala, put the repository listing into its own file
in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Call it "gpsdrive.list". I don't know if
the ".list" extension is required, but it seems to be customary.
