The disc will be handed out to all conference delegates, and so is a really nice showcase + exposure opportunity for your favourite GeoFOSS project. http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G_2009_Press_Release_28 """ The Easy steps to get your project on the FOSS4G Live DVD Sydney, Australia. 23 August 2009. http://2009.foss4g.org The Arramagong Live DVD, GISVM, and OSGeo Live-Demo projects are collaborating to create a set of simple, automated install scripts for a wide variety of Free and Open Source GIS projects, and we're calling on each project to help us write a script for their software. Projects that can write their install script this week will be included on The Arramamgong Live DVD which will be given to all delegates at the FOSS4G conference. The scripts should cover the installation and configuration of each project into a base Xubuntu 9.04 system. Separate scripts can optionally cover data, demos and tutorials. As a bonus, these scripts are exactly what packagers require to bundle your project into Debian and Ubuntu, so you will be taking the first steps toward getting your project into a Linux distribution. The base version of the FOSS4G2009 GISVM/Arramagong Live DVD can be trialled as a VMWare virtual machine and downloaded from: http://download.osgeo.org/livedvd/Arramagong_GISVM_FOSS4G2009_alpha1.7z [...] """ Feature Freeze is in less than a week, but it is mostly trivial to add packages already built for Debian/Ubuntu. Scripts can both install the app and fetch + install + setup demo user data. See here for some examples: https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/livedvd/gisvm/trunk/bin/ I have already added scripts for GRASS[1], GpsDrive (+ OSM maps for navigating around downtown Sydney)[2], and MB-System[3]. Other contributions are streaming as well. (see above URL) [1] GRASS GIS: 6.4rc including Spearfish + North Carolina sample datasets. [2] gpsdrive: Using a custom debuild for latest version as official debian package for gpsdrive lags years(!) behind. Mapnik+PostGIS support for auto tile generation is already build in, but a OSM/ PostGIS/SQL expert is needed to setup/extract just the Sydney area from world coastlines.shp + australia.osm otherwise the dataset takes up too much room on the disc to justify inclusion. (help wanted) I've got that PostGIS DB running locally for the whole of Australia, it works nicely. Now that I have the GpsDrive+OSM projections issues sorted out in GpsDrive SVN I'll patch in that bugfix & add the static CBD map tiles to the OSGeo build "real soon now". [3] mbsystem: not activated because I haven't figured out how to get it to build/link with shared libraries yet. With static libs it takes up 300mb, which is too much for the disc. (help wanted) A volunteer to add a QGIS build script (and if at all possible QGIS<-> GRASS plugin) is badly needed! It would be a true shame to not include that*; it is probably not so bad, see the gpsdrive build script for automatic .deb package building from SVN using "debuild". [*] just as it is a shame that that qgis still isn't officially packaged for Debian/Ubuntu. (DebianGIS is recruiting for volunteers! We badly need to find someone to take over PostGIS duties as well.) A nice side effect of this is that for anything still unpackaged for Debian/Ubuntu, we can use these as templates for a new package. e.g. in DebianGIS SVN I've just added the beginnings of official MB- System packaging: http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/pkg-grass/packages/mbsystem/trunk/debian/ (help wanted here too:) Also, it is my personal goal that these scripts can be worked into a live-helper build structure for fully automated builds of both the DebianGIS and OSGeo Live-Demo Live images using whatever ubuntu/debian flavour/release/media you like: http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/pkg-grass/packages/debian-gis/ https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/livedvd/live-helper/ With a good collection of build scripts this should be fairly easy. regards & a big thanks to all helpers so far, Hamish Bowman From cmprior at gmail.com Tue Sep 1 05:23:43 2009 From: cmprior at gmail.com (Chris Prior) Date: Tue, 01 Sep 2009 13:23:43 -0000 Subject: [ gpsdrive ] Problem with right click Message-ID: <52613e910909010623w81e42d4l2f412847781b2704@mail.gmail.com> I am using gpsdrive 2.10pre4 on eee 900 (eeebuntu 3.0) with the package as provided by the ubuntu community. "mapnik_caching = 1" thanks. maybe rename it "enable mapnik tile caching" to make it more obvious? Also, about the live-Mapnik I've been wondering about file sizes. For immediate display you want PNG compression off (i.e. a PPM image), for storing on disk you want it at max (but that takes time/CPU/batteries). I wonder if we could have both somehow. PPM to memory, and once it is displayed fork() off the writing to max optimized PNG to store on the disk... ?? Just a vague idea. For now with the new script gpsdrive_tile_crush.sh in SVN you can shrink your cache by about 60% for those! I'm not sure why the PNGs are so huge, even for a single road in the desert it is >100k when it should be smaller than a JPEG for line art. Maybe there is fine pixelation happening? I'm still working on understanding that. For now I'll add a --jpeg output option to gpsdrive_mapnik_gentiles.py > > - option to set the DB name at run time instead of > > compile time > > > editing gpsdriverc is not an option? The first I hope of many cities around the world! https://sourceforge.net/projects/gpsdrive/files/ It's 70mb and generated from OpenStreetMap data (circa this week) and rendered with the gpsdrive_generate_mapnik.py script via Mapnik and a PostGIS database. A working copy of 2.10pre7 with these maps will be handed out on a live-dvd to many hundreds of attendees at the upcoming Free & Open Source Geospatial 2009 conference in Sydney. Expect to see friendsd go nuts some time around 20 October. The pgRouting folks will be putting a PostGIS database with OSM data on the live disc, for the disk I've built gpsdrive with full Mapnik support, but no OSM database or world_boundaries.shp as they take up too much room. It would be great if we could link into pgRouting's DB setup, but I really don't know what I'm doing with that stuff so someone else would need to coordinate with them to make it happen. It would be *really* good to build some links between the two projects as well, as they complement each other very nicely I think. http://pgrouting.postlbs.org/ enjoy, Hamish From d.s.e at sordidmusic.com Thu Sep 3 11:01:45 2009 From: d.s.e at sordidmusic.com (Guenther Meyer) Date: Thu, 03 Sep 2009 19:01:45 -0000 Subject: [ gpsdrive ] Tileset for Sydney Australia In-Reply-To: <20090904034207.1972326e.hamish_b@yahoo.com> References: <20090904034207.1972326e.hamish_b@yahoo.com> Message-ID: <200909032102.14236.d.s.e@sordidmusic.com> Am Donnerstag 03 September 2009 schrieb Hamish: > Hi, > > For anyone interested I just uploaded a map tileset for Sydney Australia > to the SourceForge site. I am a bit confused by that, I did not switch if off in DefineOptions.cmake, but I do not install friendsd.deb. It was my understanding that that package is if you want to run the server and is not needed if you are a just a client. And the DefineOptions.cmake ON/OFF flag is the same, it only affects the server (friendsd.gpsdrive.de) code. Is that correct? I tried quickly to run it yesterday but got some recv error or so in the terminal. I didn't try very hard though. I can add a line to gpsdriverc to have it "on" automatically, but for privacy etc I'm not sure if people would want that without them knowing. my install script is here by the way: https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/livedvd/gisvm/trunk/bin/install_gpsdrive.sh > > The pgRouting folks will be putting a PostGIS database > > with OSM data on the live disc, for the disk I've built > > gpsdrive with full Mapnik support, but no OSM database or > > world_boundaries.shp as they take up too much room. > > it would be fine, if mapnik could use the data, but afaik > pgrouting needs other tables and data than mapnik...
